Tips

For when you're struggling to find a dataset...

  • ?? Find out who’s big in the field. Are there organisations that lead the way in this field (for example, NASA for space science)? If so, it’s always worth exploring their websites to look for resources.

  • 💬 See what others are saying. Reputable news sites and research-driven reports are good for learning more about the topic you’re researching. Crucially, they can also help you discover data sources and other search terms to try.

  • 📝 Check old favourites. When you are in the habit of doing online research for datasets, particularly if they are around a common theme, you will probably find a few websites that you use again and again. Building up this knowledge of ‘where to look’ can take time, so we’ve created the 🔗D4C Index of Open Data to help. Have a browse when you reach the end of this lesson and refer back to it whenever you like — it just might help you find the dataset you’re after.
